George Dawson thought the rocks near the summit of a mountain in the Opal Range looked like tombstones. He visited the area in 1884 while working on the Geological Survey of Canada. He gave the name Tombstone to this 3035 metre peak located just south of the Big Elbow / Little Elbow Loop at the western end of the Elbow Valley. The name is also attached to a pass, a campground and several small lakes near the mountain.
